Bailey made it into the office early that morning. Her hair might have been a bit messy and she wore dark glasses but at least she was there. It wasn’t a walk of shame in the doors that day but it was darn close. She had chosen, rather she woke up in, a black pair of slacks and button down red shirt. She added a blazer to hide the wrinkles in the shirt and a pair of lace up boots. It wasn’t perfect but it was only one of two outfits she had been able to procure.
What money she had was a stipend that Torchwood 3 was nice enough to grant her. She was able to get lodgings in a hotel, which was normally where she lived. She liked the fact that she never had to clean and room service was something heaven made in her opinion. She also found that most hotels had a workout room and pool, which helped her stay in shape. Then there was the option to change rooms when she had a one night stand that tries to come back. After last night she really didn’t care to see Owen, afraid he actually might have heard what she said to Daniel. She kept reminding herself that detachment was the best way to go in this sort of situation. He might not even be in the office today and she wouldn’t have to deal with him, perhaps his second in command. Ideally that would be better for her in this instance, the more time that passed the more distance she could place herself from the outside. She knew the reaction to what happened to Owen was one part annoyance with this “let’s not kill the man-eating aliens, let’s get them some tea and pastries while they eat lots of civilians” ideology. The other part was losing her other team. She had just been assigned to the self-centered, pig headed, stubborn git and he already almost died. She started to feel responsible for what happened to her other team and what almost happened to her new boss. It’s like Murphy’s Law had a spotlight on her and was making her its new poster girl. She walked past the few employees at the office, nodding when they greeted her. Her nose led her to the coffee pot and she grabbed herself a cup, wondering what Owen would think if she just turned around and walked out now. She could look for work elsewhere or become a free agent. It’s not like she’s beholden to these people in this place. Then she thinks of one of the reasons she’s sticking around, the possibility that Torchwood would be able to figure out how to send her back to her own time.
After spending enough time by the coffee pot to drink one cup and serve herself another she finally found the courage to make her way towards Owen’s office. She hesitates at the door, peeking inside, hoping that someone else would be waiting for her to officially check in.

Owen was at the desk in his office. He had a purple long sleeve shirt on and faded jeans and to top it off a cast on his leg. Owen had sent the email to Daniel on Daniel can have all the responsibilities of capturing the alien. Owen was not happy with Daniel but Owen had been expecting to see Bailey to report to him.
Picking up his white tea cup, Owen sipped his hot tea and feeling the sweetness waking him up. Owen realized it was almost empty and he smacked his lips together. Owen sat the soon to be empty tea cup down on the desk and his eyes looked up to catch a peeking Bailey. “Oh, do come in,” Owen said.
Looking at Bailey, Owen felt this might blow up. Adjusting in his seat, Owen looked at a chair. “Sit down,” Owen said dryly. He had to admit Bailey was extremely attractive and she had seemed to be aggressive. That aggressive was something Owen had liked. It made Owen believe Bailey would be rough in bed. He liked that in a woman. But there was something deeper about Bailey because since Owen saw her in the cell in Torchwood Three, he could not get Bailey out of his head.
Bailey was the last person Owen wanted to have some attachment too. Was Owen becoming a victim to females from the rift? He had hoped not! Giving some moment of silence Owen looked at her. He took a deep breathe. “I had gone over the file Captain Jack had sent me on your skills,” Owen said letting the word skills float. It was a little suspense on to Bailey. “You are specialist in armory of guns…That’s nice,” Owen paused putting his index fingers together making a temple of his hands. “But, that’s a more an on call duty. We can have you be charge of the shooting range and keep our weapons intact. But again that too is a small job but a high responsibility job.” Owen paused because he knew what he was about to say was something Bailey most likely will hate.
“Right,” Owen said bluntly. “We need a tea person. Responsibilities are not only serving tea, but cleaning, filing and research.” He stopped and looked at her. “Oh and you be doing toilets too.” Owen said smiling to her. He found that funny in a way. “And you will clean everything.”

When she saw Owen sitting behind the desk she closed her eyes a moment dreading what may be the next step in their ongoing love hate relationship, glad that the dark glasses hid the expression. She notes the cast and wonders why the heck didn’t he just take the freaking day off, it’s not like he didn’t earn it. Besides this inconveniences her, she was looking forward to speaking with someone else besides Owen.
She hesitates a moment before walking in and taking the seat offered. She crosses her legs as she does, taking another sip of coffee. She honestly doesn’t feel like talking yet, not sure what to say. When Owen speaks first she is silently relieved, letting him set the tone of the conversation. When he referred to her as a “tea person” she raised her eyebrows, this wasn’t what she was expecting. As he went on to describe the position in detail her foot twitched in aggravation. It’s like she’s back in basic training all over again or worse, she’s a secretary and maid rolled all into one. She didn’t like cleaning her own house, much less cleaning up after other people. She especially didn't like the idea of cleaning a loo. Her lips pursed in unspoken anger as she looked away from him before responding.
”There must be…” she began but then shook her head, considering her options, and deciding on a better course of actions. ”Yes sir, of course sir, was there anything else sir?” her voice cold and detached, trying to respond without anger, this was her job and he was her boss. All she could figure is that he was punishing her for their row and she’d rather take the high road in this rather than stoop to his level.

Owen could see the face expressions on Bailey. The beamers hid her eyes but the muscles on the face and the raising of an eyebrow was a sign that Owen could tell she was upset. She called him sir. Owen had to Owen face of what are you calling me, look. He had used the look a few occasions that said ‘are you kidding?’ because Owen was not accustomed to be call sir. Bailey had said more and with more deep expression of anger. Owen closed his eyes, shaking his slowly side to side. Looking up at Bailey, Owen had held two hands waving his index fingers in the air. “Please, that’s enough name calling,” Owen said.
“It is a temporary job, Bailey. Being a new member to Torchwood Four and having a history working for Torchwood One is a huge advantage and disadvantage. We…and you, we don’t know each other,” Owen thought this was very true in all views. “All parties need to earn trust. I do have good news, Bailey. I trust you more than Daniel,” Owen said, he had to say it. But it was so unprofessional but Owen had to say it. “You met Ianto Jones? Ianto Jones was a member on Torchwood One in London. Jack did not trust him. But Ianto had betrayed us by hiding his girlfriend who is a cyberwoman. Two people died and we all could have failed to keep her taking over. Ianto had been marked with twice of no trust but Jack believed in him but with less trust but soon enough Ianto won his trust and loyal to Torchwood. Ianto was teaboy and he was promoted to whatever he does now…” Owen was still looking at Ianto as a tea boy. “Oh, he had gone on the road with us,” Owen said looking at her. “That’s the Torchwood related reason why you are on the bottom of the ladder. . . Bailey, we need to gain your trust. See there is another side of the coin…” Owen paused. God, Owen had sounded like Jack there for a moment. Had Jack influenced him that much!
“We are working to bring you back. But we can sure use your skills and we sure do not want to recon you here. I mean, we have to make a new life for you and you most likely not remember your universe and we don’t have to send you back…but you know that would make things easier for all of us. But, no, Jack had thought about it but I told him don’t. But if you wanted to be recon we can do that if that’s what you want,” Owen said. “But I know it be a mistake,” Owen said he would want Bailey to stick around. “And I really do need someone to clean up for us.” Owen gave her a smug smile like he was showing he was being a wise arse. Oh, and you got a nice ass too,” he threw in. Again he was unprofessional again. He was the one in charge. “If you want try…and I do mean try to kick my ass in a challenge in like…a game of pool?” So he had thrown in a date in this conversation. “But don’t use my image in shooting range.”

She just sits there as he goes on and on about trust and Ianto. Bailey takes a deep breath when she hears the word “retcon”, clearly not liking that option. In it she hears a threat, subtle though it might be. It’s if Owen is telling her that she has to toe the line or risk of losing her work, which is really the only thing in her life. She let him go on as far as he wanted to, knowing he was right in part, and the part he was wrong about there really wasn’t anything she could do to change it, he was her boss and she had to abide. She thanked god for basic training, if the Army taught her nothing else it did teach her to swallow her pride and do what was asked of her. Control would be her focus here, control till she could figure out what else to do. She hadn’t considered using his image in the shooting range and now knew she couldn’t.
When Owen was done she hesitated, twitching her leg in annoyance. ”It wasn’t standard operating procedure to bring hostiles into the HQ where I was from. There is also the fact that the Torchwood One you knew here may be different from the one I come from. Everything seems different here.”
If she were at her Torchwood they would have had someone do all her running around by now, securing her the things she would ask for without question and making arrangements for her to stay in which ever hotel she wanted to, covered with an expense account. By now she’d have had a good wardrobe and a new MP3 player along with a car at her disposal. She’d also be cleaning up other kinds of messes.
She heard the two passes at her but she was angry again. Had he made them at her when she was trying to wake him last night she might have said yes but today she remembered why she was pissed off at him. ”Is it normal in your organization to date the help? We used to have a strict no fraternization policy. It may undermine the working relationships. Mostly we just did one night stands with people outside the workplace.” her tone blunt and direct. She scoffed a moment at a thought. ”You know technically if we are holding the sins of another Torchwood against me then it’s Captain Harkness’ fault I’m in this situation right now. He was the one who tossed me into the rift. If you want to open it back up and toss me though again I’m up for trying. Captain Harkness back there has some explaining to do and not to mention I do have a mother who is probably worried about me if she isn’t dead yet.”

Placing his hands to cover his face, Owen was at a loss. Why he was the one who had to be responsible of Bailey. Toshiko had been working on a solution but Bailey’s rift is on the side. Toshiko had more to work on. Owen wanted to scream and give up. Owen could see Toshiko smile if she heard Bailey telling Owen off.
Owen brought his hands down, he looked into Bailey’s shades and he saw his reflection. He hated it. It was like looking at himself and he really did not want to be looking at himself. He made an effort to look above the shades.
Taking a few more seconds, that seemed ages, “No dating is not a sin. If it was Torchwood Three would be in trouble. A lot of trouble,” Owen said thinking of Jack and Ianto and Daniel. Then Owen had thought of Gwen and him shagging off. Smirking at the thought, Owen missed those times. He just missed Torchwood Three. Toshiko got mad because Owen kicked the football at Toshiko’s computer messing up her work. The time Ianto shot Owen for trying to open the rift. It was like a family in a way. They were all messed up and it was the work they did. They spent all lot of time working with each other.
“One night standers are a relief and a sport too,” he said bluntly staring into her shaded lenses. “A shag and next day work. You spend days working and oh look a night shag. . .” Owen looked down at his empty mug. Owen took a deep breath, “You have a point…no dating. Here let me write that down,” Owen said sarcastically. He pulls out a paper, a pencil and starting to write. “Rule One no dating staff. Rule two…” under his breath and being crude that Owen has a responsibility. “Rule two a new one…no wear glasses in MY office,” he looked at her angry. “Rule Three:…” he cocks his head looking at Bailey. “Team outings is that wrong too? Tournaments? Seeing a cinema together? Is that against regulations too? Should I put a rule in that too? “ Owen is showing how aggravated he was.
Owen did not bother touch the Jack Harkness situation from the other universe. That was beyond Owen’s imagination. “For your mother….I am sorry,” Owen said and he felt bad. “But we will do what we can.” Owen did not want to lose her but if Owen was going past the line of not respecting Bailey he had to fix that. “Rule three…Leader need to be less crude..” he said than scribbled it out. “Right like that’s gonna happen.” He looked at her. “Is there anything else we missed?”

She uncrossed and re-crossed her legs in irritation, changing which leg was on top. She finished off her coffee and set the empty cup on Owen’s desk, intending to take it with her when she leaves. She let him go into his tirade, wondering how many times a day she’ll have to listen to this. When he mentioned the rule about no glasses in his office she sighed and slipped her sunglasses off. The dark glasses hid bloodshot eyes from lack of sleep and a hangover. She folded the glasses closed and tucked them away in an inside pocket of her blazer. She then placed her hands on her knee, looking to Owen as he continued on. When he finally turned to her, asking her that simple question, she pursed her lips again.
”Do we have to keep fighting? It’s going to be rather taxing around her if we keep sniping at each other every chance we get.” She was tied, physically and emotionally. It wasn’t that long ago that she almost died. There was also the loss of her team, her family. Then last night, she shuttered and looked away at the thought of another person, no matter how little she knew him. She was absolutely sick of death on her doorstep, well at least death of people she cared about.
She brought her hand up to her face, rubbing her eyes a moment, clearly tired. ”It’s not your crudeness. I can deal with crude, I was in the Army.” She leans back in the chair further, her mind wandering to the last few weeks. She felt like a rat in a maze, first cooped up in a cell, then to be told she had new duties, different duties, and to get that cheese she had to maneuver carefully. She refocused her eyes on Owen. ”So why do you think I was assigned here?” She knew the obvious reason was she grew up in Scotland but she was sure there was some other reason, Captain Harkness did not seem like a man who did things with only one obvious reason.

“No fighting? You are not fun. Take the spoil of this loving relationship,” Owen said. He looked her in the eyes. He could see she needed sleep. He worked his way out of his chair, cursing under his breath because his leg was a mess. The cast was on his right calf because having a whole cast will not be fun. He stood there gathering his strength. He had to move because he wanted to move and wake himself up.
“Torchwood Four and Torchwood Three are not military,” Owen added. “For Jack wanting to 'you' to work with us,” Owen said tapping the pen in his other hand. “Maybe he is busy watching Daniel? I don’t know. He assigned you here and that must be worth something.”
Tosh’s voice could be heard as Tosh called for Owen. “Well, that is inspirational callin’” Owen said limping with the cast to Tosh’s area. Tosh gone off saying she could have gone to him but Tosh had gone of rambling about an out break of muscles missing in children at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasglow.
“Can this be connected to the Boston and Cardiff?” Owen asked Tosh. Tosh gone off saying it possibly could. “Call Cardiff and tell Jack the news. We know they had experience with it. I will go to the hospital to check the victims. Why it had to be children,” Owen said with pain in his voice. He hated when children become victims.
Turning to look at Bailey, Owen looked at Bailey. “Bailey, you driving us there,” Owen said with confidence. “Pack a piece and a tranquilizer gun for both of us. We might run in trouble,” Owen feel they had to go for worse scenic. “Meet me at the SUV, time I get there you be there with the equipment.” So he had gone off. Toshiko most likely was concern of Owen and concern of Owen being with Bailey. Owen had made a pit stop to get his emergency medical kit. The SUV was packed with a bigger med kit for emergencies. Because Jack said we need to be prepare blah blah blah.
Owen was just getting to the SUV when Bailey got there. Owen was working the seat belt on the seat, he had a viewed the information on the computer monitor in the SUV. Smiling to Bailey, “This might be a boring trip but very education…But it might be an adventure one. And don’t worry I won’t call this a date,” Owen smirked when he said that. Owen might want to know what buttons that can get Bailey mad. Owen liked a woman who had spice. But he decided to pull back on that. After all, Owen was leader and maybe he starting to realize things he won’t be able to do. He had to be in charge.
“Regular speed limit,” Owen said looking ahead. “Not an emergency…You might have a chance to high speed this baby soon,” he said with a bit smirk. Owen was actually trying to bring positive benefits for Bailey. “But we can speed date on that,” Owen gave her a side look. “Sorry. Torchwood humour!” he winked at her and looked ahead. “Right, leader flirting is in rules one. None of that…that is so bullocks!” he moaned. “Turn left here on the second lightt,” Owen was telling her because he had the vid map to the hospital.

When Owen stood up she got to her feet as well, taking a few steps when he winces, almost reaching out to help him. When he looked like he was going to do okay she took a step back, leaving him his independence. She again goes quiet, letting him dress her down, to tired to argue anymore.
When he moves out of the room she picks up the two empty coffee cups and heads out to the coffee area, filling them both. As she comes walking back into the area with the fresh coffee, offering a cup to Owen, she slips her sunglasses back on. As Owen leaves she softly asks Tosh were the weapons locker is, to which she is given directions. Since she already had her gun on her, a newly cleaned and shined Ash, she picks up the tranq guns and a gun for Owen. Then on second thought she grabs another gun for herself, in case they only needed to make a little hole, as opposed to the hole Ash would leave.
She got down to the SUV as she snapped the clip on her extra gun into place, checking the sights. She slid into the driver’s seat, holding a hand out for the keys. The flirting might have gotten under her collar, or might have been something she’d take part in, had she not been so darned tired.
After getting the keys she handed Owen a gun, already with the clip in, and a tranq gun, also with the clip in. Starting up the SUV, she drove in the direction that he pointed out to her, part way flipping on the radio and switching between stations, trying to find something familiar to her.

“Right,” Owen looked over at Bailey. “Bailey,” Owen paused. “You are welcome to stay behind I check the children. I think nobody should witness this.” Looking forward again, Owen tightened his jaw. The children parents, do the parents know? He felt it in his heart. He loved his job but dealing aliens that killed children was just heart breaking for anyone. Not one soldier in war could swallow this drama. Owen had research on how all lot of soldiers had gone off the deep end in the war. Soldiers were forced to shoot children in some villages. The enemies got clever by tapping dynamite or explosions on little children. Soldiers see these poor children approach them and they are forced to shoot to survive the war. Some soldiers failed and blow with the child. It was terrible.
Owen hated the fact children die from disease too. Owen had a dream that he told a kid he can fight cancer. Owen remembered he fought this cancer that did look like death. The problem Owen did but Owen had been there but he had misplaced himself with an alien artifact a long time ago. That was the device that had made him vanish for a month. That’s when Captain Jack Harkness gave up on Owen and hired Daniel. It’s a confusion sub-plot but it slowly things fall in place.
When Bailey parked the SUV, Owen climbed out of the van. He stood there looking at Bailey. “Are you staying?” Owen was being professional, calm and cool. Owen could start to smell the hospital all ready. He really never liked that smell. He really did not like doctors either. Ever since he lost Katie, the memories still return to Owen. That’s where his life turned upside down. Tapping his hand on the door, Owen could feel the warmth of the steel of the car. “Chose wisely,” Owen said with a smirk. He had hope she choose on what she wanted.

She smirked at him as he stammers about trying to talk her out of going inside with him. It wasn’t something she was comfortable doing at this point though. She easily handles the SUV, taking each turn with precision. She half listened to some song on the radio by someone named Gaga. When she parked the SUV she got out of the car, pulling out the Torchwood gun and flipping off the safety. She then pulled back the slide mechanism, chambering a round. She then tucked it into the handy-dandy hip holster and adjusted her sunglasses. Yep, she had bad-ass written all over her.
“Would you mind briefing me on what is the situation here?” It being her first day she has no idea what happened at Torchwood in Boston…or Torchwood anywhere here for that matter.

Owen heard the click of Bailey removing the safety of her gun. That bothered Owen. “Bailey, this is not a threat. It’s a hospital and we are going in the children’s ward.”
Walking in the hospital, Owen pulled out his wallet with an identify card. A security guard was at present, Owen handed the man the card. The officer looked at him over and looked at Bailey. “She’s with me,” Owen said. The security officer nodded his head to Bailey, and gave her a small smile. The officer had a small twinkle in his brown eyes. But the man had a wedding band but the officer had an eye to look.
Right, Owen thought moving through the double doors. “Right,” Owen said walking quickly down to the directory. Owen was scanning the directory, “Toshiko, we are at the hospital,” Owen said in the ear piece. “North exit, be out navigation,” Owen said to Toshiko. On the end Toshiko had started giving them directions.
As they walked, Owen begun the briefing, “We have a case of aliens that are literally ripping the muscles off humans,” Owen said. “Nasty buggers too. The muscles are removed from the bones. The bones are clean. And I do mean clean. They first appeared in Cardiff by data entry I saw. They had some in Boston but eventually they seem to be gone. They had thirty cases of humans with missing muscles. No connections. Random of people, well except when there was family who were victim but they were all together by the Boston Police records. We haven’t a good description what they look like. We have a rough description like a long tail, with a spike club like that dinosaur. I think they are furry. You know, that creature we encountered I think it fit a little of that description I think…from ALL the records and mine that these aliens eject poison into the muscle. The poison could be like relaxes the muscle for its pulling off the victim…” Owen said and realized Bailey and he was entering the elevator. Of course Owen was able to explain all this too Bailey as he listened to Toshiko giving directions to the children award.
Owen pressed a button on the elevator door and looked at Bailey in her gorgeous blue eyes, “One last time. Do you want to continue to see what’s past these elevator doors?” Owen said. Owen remembered how he went sick in the stomach when he saw the alien in his finance’s brain. He was shock from it. He was angry. He was scared. He was concerned. He could not believe that the alien in Katie had killed the doctors and the nurses in the room.
Owen feeling he did not want Bailey to see it. “Look, I will be frank,” he said adjusting his center and getting all cocky in his attitude. “This is not a game. Don’t pull a Daniel on me here.” He did not want Bailey feel she had to prove she had to prove she could take anything.
The elevator door open, Owen walked out quickly, walked to the Nurse station, he pulled out his identify card, “Dr Owen Harper of NHS I am here to see doctor Comet,” Owen said. Comet was the name Toshiko gave to Owen. Comet was the doctor who had been working with the cases of the children. Owen was not sure Bailey had followed or back out. Owen let Bailey make the call.
